LLP Protects Solar Power Systems against Nature’s Leading Threat
As an industry expert in lightning protection, Loehr Lightning Protection Co. (LLP) provides special solutions to help fortify power grids, power generation applications and power distribution facilities against nature’s leading weather threat.
LLP’s mission is to protect lives, property and material assets against lightning’s deadly and destructive electrical energy. And with the challenges of improving lightning safety in the built environment always changing, our innovative and safety standard compliant LPS solutions meet the demands of a complex world. When it comes to lightning, unprotected is unsustainable.
Solar-powered energy systems (photovoltaic panels installed for conversion of thermal energy into electricity and solar panels which convert solar radiation into heat) are a rapidly increasing technology. Unfortunately, these systems can be highly susceptible to lightning, due to their topography and large surface areas. Sensitive components of unprotected systems can malfunction, affecting the performance of an entire solar park. Additionally, repeated damage by lightning, can compromise general maintenance protocols and even pose conflicts with insurance coverage.
Be it roof-mounted systems on single family homes, stand-alone solar arrays or ground-mounted systems, these energy sources typically require safety standard compliant LPS and surge protection as they are continually exposed to a myriad of environmental factors that can create potential interference. System failure or downtime can result in expensive repairs and costly production delays.
A comprehensive protection approach includes an external LPS network to include strike termination devices (lightning rods), a down conductor system, bonding and proper grounding (earthing). Surge protection devices (SPD’s) are often included for internal LPS and equipotential bonding. It’s also important to ensure that building code requirements are observed when solar power systems are installed on public buildings. Conversely, installations of solar power systems should not interfere with external LPS designed to protect buildings and their occupants.
Serving as Virginia’s leading lightning protection provider since 1947, LLP is your trusted provider for solar-powered systems to protect your investment and ensure cost-effective operation.
